Senior Product Designer

Based in Philadelphia, Pinnacle 21 is a leader in clinical trial data software and services. Our vision is a clean data pipeline that ends in a successful regulatory submission. We're an established startup that builds software to streamline the drug approval process, bringing life-saving medicines to patients faster. Pinnacle 21 is a certified Great Place to Work, and we're looking for motivated talent. Come help us revolutionize clinical trials and streamline the drug approval process.

Work that matters – When good drugs get delayed to the market, it’s not just money that’s wasted. Every day we save gives that many more patients longer, healthier lives.

Work autonomously – Enjoy the freedom to develop your talents without being micromanaged. We’ll support you as you add to your skillset and grow to own multiple projects

Global footprint – We serve a diverse community of users from around the world. Our software is the industry standard for preparing clinical trial data for regulatory submission.

What you’ll be doing

Over the next year, one of our team’s highest priority projects is building a Data Science Platform. This platform will be used in clinical trials, which require work from several different departments. These departments work in silos. You, a seasoned product designer, may have experienced siloed departments at your current or earlier company where Marketing, Product Management, Engineering, and QA work without ever consulting each other. Only when they hit a roadblock do they reach out. The large gap in feedback results in less quality and efficiency. The same thing is happening with clinical trials, but we want that to change.

Our platform roadmap is in place, the software is in development, the UI Design Library is set up, and our Design System is being built. Now we need to double our team of product designers from one to...wait for it.... two. This is where you enter.

The work is challenging because we are uniting separately developed software into a single platform. Also, our product teams have varied experience working with Product Designers.

Responsibilities

As part of the Product Team, reporting to the Principal Product Designer, you will flesh out user stories from your insightful questions and constructive feedback. You will play a leading role in translating those stories into user experience solutions through mockups and prototypes. You will use existing workflows or introduce scalable new ones. You will work closely with engineers as they uncover edge cases or technical roadblocks and suggest and/or make design changes on the fly. At times, you will design graphics that enforce our brand for either the product, help content, or for internal or client facing events (conferences, parties, etc.).

You will find gaps and redundancies as our Design System evolves and advocate for its adoption across the company.

In return, you will learn a ton about the unique challenges we have in the life science industry. You will work alongside an incredibly talented team of product managers, designers, and developers. You will enjoy a challenging but autonomous environment that allows you to manage ownership of multiple projects. Most importantly, your work will help bring medicines, like the Covid-19 vaccines, to the public faster, cheaper, and with fewer side effects.

What we’re looking for

  • Someone who did not skim (or worse skip) the “What you will be doing” section.

  • Experience designing workflows with mockups and prototypes for a global audience with a wide variety of accessibility needs and challenges

  • We use Sketch but we like comparable experiences too.

  • We do not need a UI only designer.

  • Knowledge of product management practices and tools.

  • We follow the Shape Up method and use Atlassian products, but we like comparable experience too.

  • Basic understanding of HTML/CSS standards to effectively communicate with engineers.

  • Empathetic observations to communicate with the engineering team as advocates for both the user and the product team.

Include with your submission

In 250 words or less, tell us about the UX project you are most proud of.

What to expect within the application process

Send us your resume along with your answer to our submission question.

Over the course of a few weeks, you will move through 3 separate interviews with various team members to assess your skills and give you the opportunity to learn what Certara is all about.

Between the second and third interview you will be given a small project. We will include instructions, assets, and our goals for you with the project. During the third interview you will have the opportunity to talk about your project.

Congratulations! You have received an offer.

During your first week, you will go through a general on-boarding process. You will learn about our products and culture, followed by a 90-day on-boarding in your new role.

A bit about us

As clinical trial data are collected and prepared for submission to a health authority, our platform ensures they comply with data standards and are ready for regulatory review. It's used by the FDA, Japan’s PMDA, and global biopharmaceutical sponsors and clinical research organizations to validate clinical trial data. We empower the life sciences industry to ensure clinical data quality or “fitness,” enabling fast and smooth marketing approvals. In fact, it's our platform that drives the FDA’s 21st Century Review Initiative.
